Men! Dancing!
Men Dancing is a collective of men aged over 50 who meet weekly to move, discuss, and play. None of the members come from traditional dance backgrounds, yet they share a curiosity about movement and a commitment to discovering what dance can mean at this stage in life. Through improvisation, collaboration, and performance, the group explores how movement connects to emotion, memory, and identity — and how it can express the experience of ageing with vitality and honesty.
Since forming, Men Dancing have created and performed a range of works for stage and screen. We had the pleasure of sharing our work Crossing the Bar at Ageless Festival 2024, a piece that was also developed into a site-specific dance film. The company’s interest in dance for camera has led to several film-based works, including their most recent piece, Entrances and Exits, filmed in Liverpool Cathedral. These projects reflect the group’s ongoing exploration of how dance can exist both live and digitally, and how the camera can capture the nuance and texture of mature movement.
The company’s practice is rooted in inclusivity, creativity, and the joy of shared experience. Through dance, they challenge perceptions of age, masculinity, and what it means to begin something new later in life. Men Dancing celebrates the expressive potential of every body — proving that it’s never too late to move, to create, and to be seen.
